Robinhood acquires Bitstamp for 200 million dollars: global expansion in the crypto sector

Robinhood Markets, Inc., known U.S. trading platform, has officially completed the acquisition of the European exchange Bitstamp for a value of 200 million dollars.

The operation, entirely financed in cash, represents a decisive step for the international expansion of Robinhood’s crypto division, which now extends well beyond U.S. borders, reaching Europe, United Kingdom, and Asia.

The agreement, initially announced in June 2024, was confirmed without price changes and significantly strengthens the company’s position in the global landscape of digital asset.

Bitstamp: a pillar in institutional trading and Robinhood’s intentions

Founded in Luxembourg, Bitstamp is one of the longest-standing and most respected cryptocurrency exchanges in the industry. It currently serves over 5,000 institutional clients and 50,000 retail users, with the majority of the trading volume generated by the institutional clientele.

This data highlights the solidity and reputation of the exchange among professional investors. In the last 12 months, Bitstamp recorded a revenue of 95 million dollars, confirming its relevance in the sector.

With the acquisition, Robinhood not only inherits an established customer base, but also obtains over 50 operational licenses, a crucial element for legally and quickly expanding its offering in new regulated markets.

The acquisition of Bitstamp is not an isolated case. On May 13, 2025, Robinhood announced another major deal: the purchase of the Canadian platform WonderFi for about 179 million dollars

This operation aims to strengthen the company’s presence in the Canadian market, confirming a well-defined global expansion strategy.

According to Johann Kerbrat, General Manager of Robinhood Crypto, the company is open to further acquisitions in the digital asset sector, provided that these allow for a significant acceleration in growth:

“If we can find a way to accelerate by at least 18-24 months – and we have excellent reasons to believe that it is a valid acquisition – it is definitely something we will consider.”

The crypto division of Robinhood has shown impressive growth. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, it generated 252 million dollars in revenue, a figure that far exceeds the annual turnover of Bitstamp.

This demonstrates how the company is succeeding in capitalizing on the growing interest in cryptocurrencies, offering accessible tools to both retail and institutional investors.

With the integration of Bitstamp, Robinhood will be able to rely on a consolidated technological platform, a network of professional clients, and a regulated presence in the main international markets.

Objective: tokenizzazione degli asset reali

One of the stated goals of the CEO of Robinhood, Vladimir Tenev, is to expand the company’s crypto offering in the emerging sector of tokenization of real assets.

This technology, which allows for the representation of physical assets such as real estate, art, or commodities in the form of digital tokens, is considered one of the next major revolutions in the financial world.

The acquisition of Bitstamp represents a concrete step in this direction, providing Robinhood with the infrastructure and licenses necessary to operate in a complex and constantly evolving regulatory environment.

With this 200 million dollar operation, Robinhood opens a new chapter in its history, transforming from a trading platform focused on the United States to a global player in the crypto sector

The integration of Bitstamp and WonderFi not only expands the company’s geographical reach but also strengthens its ability to compete with the big names in the industry, such as Binance and Coinbase.

The growth strategy through targeted acquisitions, combined with a clear vision on the evolution of the market, positions Robinhood as one of the most dynamic and ambitious players in the world of criptovalute.

Conclusion: a global vision for the future of crypto

The acquisition of Bitstamp by Robinhood is not just a financial operation, but a strong signal of the company’s willingness to lead innovation in the digital asset sector

With a solid institutional client base, an expanding international presence, and a focus on tokenization, Robinhood is preparing to play a central role in the transformation of the global financial system.

In a context where cryptocurrencies are becoming increasingly mainstream, Robinhood’s strategic approach could prove to be successful, consolidating its position as a leader di nuova generazione nel fintech.
